Outside Television and RED Digital Cinema Announce REDIRECT 2016

March 15, 2016

Westport, Conn. and Irvine, Ca (March 15, 2016) On a quest to find the most compelling adventure lifestyle story, Outside Television, America’s preeminent adventure television network, and RED Digital Cinema, a leading manufacturer of professional digital cameras, are partnering on REDirect Explore 2016, the third installment of RED’s REDirect film contest. Building on the previous themes of skate and surf, filmmakers this year will focus on exploring the outside world. Hand selected by Outside Television, ten talented cinematographers from around the globe will be challenged with creating, capturing and editing a captivating outdoor adventure lifestyle story plus a compelling still photo pulled from the footage. The contestants will shoot within a 60 day production window with final materials due on June 1st. The winners will be announced at an off-site viewing party on August 4th in conjunction to the Outdoor Retailer Trade Show in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Each contestant will be provided with a RED SCARLET-W camera system plus gear and accessories from G-Technology, Dell, Carl Zeiss and f-stop, collectively valued at over $35,000, to use exclusively for the contest. Participants will be judged on both their “Best Moment in Time” still photo as well as their finished short film. The completed film and supplemental content, including behind the scenes footage captured during production, will be accessible via RED.com/redirect and OutsideTelevision.com. The competition’s Grand Prize Winner will be awarded the 5K SCARLET-W camera system plus all the gear used to shoot their winning entry.

“This partnership with RED provides Outside Television with such a great opportunity to showcase amazing content by highlighting some incredible adventure filmmakers who are excellent story tellers” said Chris Crowley, Executive Producer for Outside Television. “By providing these talented contestants the best equipment on the market and a platform known specifically for its visual content, there are no limits on the submissions we will receive.”
“We’re excited to partner with Outside Television to give filmmakers a chance to bring REDirect Explore 2016 to the masses,” says Jarred Land, President of RED Digital Cinema. “With the 5K SCARLET-W, they’re getting a perfect storm of a camera – superior image quality with maximum flexibility. I can’t wait to see what they create.”

About RED

RED Digital Cinema is a leading manufacturer of professional digital cameras and accessories. In 2006, RED Digital Cinema began a revolution with the 4K RED ONE® digital cinema camera. By 2008, the camera that changed cinema also began to change the world of stills. RED’s DSMC® (Digital Still and Motion Camera) system allows the same camera being used to shoot features like “The Hobbit” trilogy and “Gone Girl” — as well as the Emmy-winning “House of Cards” — to also be used to shoot covers for magazines such as “Vogue” and “Harper’s Bazaar”. In 2014, RED entered the broadcast space with the introduction of the REDCAST™ Module that allows streaming live 4K while recording 6K R3D masters. RED continues to innovate with its recent debut of the newest members of the RED DRAGON family, the RED RAVEN, SCARLET-W and WEAPON cameras. These cameras combine compact and lightweight design with cutting edge performance, and the 6K WEAPON includes an option to upgrade to an 8K sensor at a later date. All RED cameras are built around a modular foundation that gives the flexibility of full customization for each shoot.
