YouTube and RED Bring VP9 to the Masses
June 25th, 2014

On June 19th RED President Jarred Land announced that YouTube deployed Google's VP9 codec for 4K streaming on select channels.

"We recently worked with YouTube engineers to enable 4K VP9 encoding, and we are very happy that all new 4K videos uploaded to select YouTube channels will now be encoded with the updated VP9 Codec."

VP9 provides a huge performance boost for 4K streaming. And unlike the HEVC (h.265) codec, VP9 is completely open-source and royalty free.

In conjunction with the codec's rollout, RED has launched an official YouTube channel, Shot on RED. For content creators who want to showcase their 4K RED footage, email youtube@red.com with a link to your work to have it considered for a featured spot.

Thanks to RED's partnership with YouTube, RED Gear Training classes will be provided every other month at YouTube Space Los Angeles with classes being offered at YouTube Space London, New York, and Tokyo later this year.
